2018 Honda CR-V Family Vehicle Review

Are you looking for a mid-size family vehicle? Something that’s big enough for you and your little ones without being too massive? If so, then you’ll probably want to check out the Honda CR-V for 2018.

This is a crossover with a lot of extra features that you and your family will love. Whether you need spare cargo room to bring all of your stuff (read: toys), some high-tech devices to stay connected with each other, or fuel efficiency to save money; the CR-V has it all.

That’s why today we’re going to look at the top features and benefits that you can expect when you buy this vehicle. It’s made for families, but it has a ton of bonuses that you will enjoy every time you get behind the wheel.

2018 Honda CR-V Pros

Fuel Efficiency

The CR-V boasts 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. That’s impressive for a crossover SUV. In fact, this is one of the best-rated models in its class.

It’s almost better to compare it to hybrid vehicles instead of standard crossovers. On the highway, the CR-V has a range of up to 450 miles, which is much better than most of the competition.

Good to look at, good to drive, and good on gas. The CR-V is the most fuel-efficient compact crossover we’ve tested so far, and it’s not a hybrid—yet.” – Car and Driver

Improved Cargo Space

When all of the seats are up, you can store up to 10 pieces of luggage.

When they’re down, that number shoots up to 25. No matter how many people are traveling, you should have enough storage for all of your stuff.

The CR-V’s utility stretches beyond just space. The rear bumper is low, making it easier to load heavy cargo. The adjustable trunk floor can be level with the folded-flat seats or lowered to accommodate taller items.” – US News and World Report

Sleek and Comfortable Interior

You get plenty of head and legroom with the CR-V, and the internal materials are both chic and affordable.

You get the feeling of a high-tech vehicle without paying extra for it. If you upgrade to the EX or Touring models, then you will get a luxurious interior that makes it seem like you’re riding in a high-end vehicle.

Thankfully, it won’t cost thousands extra to get that kind of experience.

Safe for Everyone

As usual, the CR-V is a top safety pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Not only does it come with standard features (i.e., airbags), but it uses some high-tech protection devices as well.

Honda Sensing is the proprietary suite of safety services, which include things like anti-collision steering and warnings if you start to drift out of your lane.

Installing child seats is also super easy in this vehicle. It uses the standard LATCH system for locking the seat into place, and the spacious interior means that you won’t have to struggle to get in the right position.

Other safety features include the standard multi-angle rearview camera system, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring with Cross Traffic Monitor.” – Motor Trend

Smooth Handling

Although you won’t be able to go street racing with the CR-V, it’s not built for that kind of ride. Instead, it offers soft brakes and comfortable cornering that will make you feel in control at all times.

In this regard, the CR-V is departing from other, sportier models offered by its competitors.

Since Honda is billing this as a family vehicle, they’ve decided to trade in its zip and energy for something more refined and easier to manage.

Overall, when you have kids in the car, this change will feel more than welcome.

Any parent moonlighting as a street racer might be disappointed with the CR-V’s acceleration. On the other hand, they—along with everyone else—will appreciate its refined ride, enthusiastic steering, and strong brakes.” – Car and Driver

2018 Honda CR-V Cons

Poor Infotainment Package

The fact that it’s missing an auxiliary connection is bad enough, but the CR-V lacks some of the comprehensive controls that modern drivers have come to expect. Overall, the car’s devices are limiting and can be frustrating at times.

At times, the CR-V can feel quite sluggish, especially when compared to its contemporaries in the crossover category. Nonetheless, it shouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

With such a sleek interior, you would think that it would be well insulated from the wind and tires. Unfortunately, a lot of that noise seeps in, although it’s not overwhelming.

2018 Honda CR-V Trim Levels and Packages

As with any new vehicle, you want to have some level of customization. After all, you don’t want to pay for things that you don’t need, and you want your car to cater to your preferences.

As such, it’s imperative that you compare the different packages and trims you can buy so that you can find the perfect one for you and your family.

Fortunately, we’ve done all of the hard work for you. There are three base levels from which to choose, and each one has a bit of variation as well.

Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from each version.

LX: If you’re looking for the basic package and standard features, you can go with either the front or all-wheel drive option. These are the specs for each.

LX Front-Wheel

  • Price: $24,150
  • Mileage: 28 mpg combined
  • Engine: 184 horsepower, 2.4-Liter
  • Transmission: Two-speed CVT w/ OD
  • Colors: Six options, from silver to deep red

LX All-Wheel Drive

  • Price: $25,550
  • Mileage: 27 mpg combined
  • Engine: Same as base
  • Transmission: Same as base
  • Colors: Same as base

EX: if you want added features and some luxury benefits, then choose one of the EX trims.

You can get a better dashboard system, as well as bonuses like heated seats and side mirrors. This version also comes with smartphone integration and more ways to connect to your devices.

The Transmission and number of seats are still the same, though.

EX Front-Wheel

  • Price: $26,950
  • Mileage: 30 mpg combined
  • Engine: 190 horsepower, 1.5-Liter
  • Colors: Base plus four more

EX All-Wheel

  • Price: $28,350
  • Mileage: 29 mpg combined
  • Engine: Same as front-wheel
  • Colors: Same as front-wheel

EX-L: The L stands for luxury, and you get it with these trims.

Leather seats and more technology ups the price tag but also makes the car more enjoyable to drive.

This trim level also comes with a power tailgate, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and power seating.

EX-L Front-Wheel

  • Price: $29,450
  • Mileage: 30 mpg combined

EX-L All-Wheel

  • Price: $30,850
  • Mileage: 29 mpg combined

Touring: This is the creme-de-la-creme of the CR-V lineup.

You can expect all of the features that come with the LX and EX models, plus some goodies that show off Honda’s high-tech future.

Some examples of these upgrades include rain-sensing wipers, hands-free tailgate, and satellite navigation built-in.

Touring Front-Wheel

  • Price: $32,650
  • Mileage: 30 mpg combined

Touring All-Wheel

  • Price: $34,050
  • Mileage: 20 mpg combined

As you can see, the Honda CR-V has a lot to offer for families that want both style and substance. It’s sleek enough to make mom and dad happy, but safe and comfortable enough for the kids as well.

As a crossover, this vehicle is not built for large groups of people, so don’t expect to bring the whole soccer team with you to practice.

However, compared to any sedan or mid-size car, the CR-V is much more spacious and offers a lot more comfort for five seats. Unless you’re on a budget, we highly recommend upgrading to the EX model.

The addition of Honda Sense and the seven-inch touchscreen is worth it, even though the proprietary infotainment system is lacking.

We appreciate the small details of heated seats and dimming rear view mirrors as well.

If you’re looking for one of the best and most reliable family vehicles, you will appreciate everything that the 2018 Honda CR-V has to offer.
