Top 5 Tesla Competitors That Will Actually Pose a Serious Threat in the EV Market

When Tesla showed up with the idea of an electric vehicle, the whole idea looked like a joke and they were so skeptical everybody was so cracked up about it and were waiting patiently for it to fail. The idea looked strange, has a limited range and just looked straight out weird.

Today, the automotive industry is beginning to change for good. People have actually started seeing that it’s the future because words are out that these cars drive well, have enough battery capacity for daily driving and were quick, people have started seeing them with a more welcoming eye than the one they’ve been looking at them with before.

In mid-2010, things started to go well for the previously publicly despised company. Now, everybody knows what a Tesla was if he/she sees them driving on the road.

As the curtains of 2010 winds up to a close, Tesla has achieved so much recognition with its available models then that other car companies realized that electric vehicles have come to stay.

And when technology companies get the gist of a potential sellable market, they all jump on it without much ado because they don’t want their brand name to be found missing in that market in the nearest future.

In this post, we will take a closer look at some of Tesla’s competitors that are worth talking about. First, let’s me show you the yardstick we’ve used to filter out these few to actually call them competitors, because, just a few companies have been able to produce a car that was actually able to measure up with Tesla.

For this case study, I am looking at new electric cars that are coming from already established companies; companies that are bent on coming up with their own innovations and not copying Tesla’s design and features back to back.

To make it clear, we are not talking about companies like Faraday’s future and others or cars from companies that have already tried to get their feet wet in this market in the past.

Also, In this post, we will be taking a closer look at the high-end specs of this competitors.

Are you ready?

Let’s dive right in.

Jaguar I-pace (2018)

Jaguar I-pace

The fact that this electric vehicle is the first on our list is no coincidence. It’s totally worth it. According to Jaguars marketing team, the mission of this car on earth is to be the most refined electric vehicle ever produced in the history of mankind.

According to them, during the design phase, each car went through eight weeks of continuous vibration testing. It features a 90kW battery and has two motors generating a combined power of 294Kwatts and 700NM of torque. This mechanics will produce power that will propel the car from 0-100KM/HR in 4.8 seconds (0-62MPH).

The I-Pace is up to 480KM of range and the DC fast charging will take over 2HRS to charge the battery to full. The estimated release date is in mid-2018 and the price starts at around USD100,000 for the base model. Jaguar’s goal is that, by 2025, all of its cars will be powered by electric in one form or the other.

Porche Mission E (2019)

Porsche Mission E

With this concept electric vehicle, automotive analysts are asking whether Porche is just trying to warn Tesla or are they trying to improve their brand?

The reason for this question comes from the fact that the Porche Mission E is the fastest of the 5 competitors, it moves from 0-100KM/HR in under 3.5 seconds but still weighs up to. That’s a feat only a few electric vehicles can be able to pull off. The concept can go to 200KM in less than 12 seconds and has a top speed of 250KM/HR. To make this possible and keep the acceleration going strong all the way to the top speed, two-speed gearboxes will be used.

The engineers behind this car stated that the EV has a computer blended braking system where the brake pedal is just a request for breaking rather than being connected directly to the mechanical systems responsible for the braking function. When the break is pressed, the computer breaking system works out whether to use the break or to regenerate a breaking from the motor.

Porche claims a 15 mins charge time for this car’s battery from 0-80 percent on its specialized charges. This charges will generate 80Volts with special technologies to prevent overheating. The car’s price is estimated to start at USD70,000.

Hyundai Kona EV (2018)

Hyundai Kona EV

This South Korean company is taking a bold step into this market with the Kona EV. There are two variants of this vehicle but the one with the longest range is said to have a 64Kw battery pack with the EPA range of 470KM. It travels from 0-100KM/HR is 7 seconds. The battery can charge to full within 1HR and it will get you through 0-8% battery life. The higher variant is said to be around $45,000.

Aston Martin Rapide Electric (2019)

This British company, Aston Martin will be pushing the RAPIDE electric vehicle into production in 2019. It will have 600Kwatts of power in an all drive format and has 320KM of range. More details about this electric vehicle are still blurred. Details concerning the acceleration are still not clear. But, the Aston Martin Rapide EV is said to cost around $255,000 and it’s going to be a limited production of just 155 cars.

According to Aston Martin, the goal here is to produce something that’s above Tesla targeting those people that are not limited by their cash but are limited by the offer. It promises to give an incredible acceleration that’s equal to a gasoline.

Mercedes EQ (2019)

Mercedes EQ

The German automotive company is also stepping into the action without looking back. From their end, they are presenting the EQ concept. The EQ will pride itself on its battery capacity which is over 70KW/HR with the range of about 450KM.

The EQ is equipped with two electric motors on the front and rear axles that gives a total combined power output of around 300Kw. This will drive the car from 0-100KM/HR in just 5 seconds. It will be priced at $76,000 and will be arriving in 2019.

Audi E Tron (2018)

Audi E Tron

Audi also has their eyes on the electric vehicle market. The Ethron has around 442KM range on a 95Kw battery pack. It’s equipped with three electric motors that give a total of 320Kw pushing the car from 0-100KM/HR in 4.8 seconds.

The DC fast charging will load the battery up with battery juice in just 50 minutes. The car will start at the price of $100,000 and it will be showing up in late 2018. After taking a look that these vehicles you will see that these big automobile companies have huge competitive plans for Tesla.

As the year passes by and technological innovations advance further, with time the competition will be very tough and while Tesla is Tesla, and the brand name will stand for long as the pioneers of electric vehicles, can they keep up with the likes of Mercedes and the rest of this big companies when the competition starts heating up?
