Biometrics and fingerprint devices have now become part and parcel of virtually everyone’s everyday life. If you don’t use them at the workplace or at school, you probably have a smartphone device with fingerprint technology feature. But did you know that apart from its digitization, there is pretty much nothing new to this form of technology?

Did you also know that the use of fingerprints started with ancient Babylonians and Chinese businessmen where the prints were smudged on wet clay by traders upon closing a business deal? In such a case, technological advancements have only served to popularize, digitize, modernize and find more use of this ancient personal identification technology. Here are some of the ways the fingerprint technology is used in everyday life:

Managing organizational membership

Many organizations today are employing the current technological advancement in managing their membership. Hospitals, schools and even social meeting hubs like clubs have resulted in the use of fingerprint devices to manage their members.

Traditionally, these facilities used card memberships, but constant reports of loss, theft, and duplication prompted these institutions to result in a more secure management system, fingerprints. Note that while this system has its shortfalls like copying and duplicity of prints from the fingerprint devices, the malpractice isn’t widespread and will also be voided by the adoption of 3D fingerprint technology.

Fingerprints as the new passwords

Banks and other financial institutions formed the earliest batch of institutions to adopt fingerprint technology while phasing out or to complement passwords. This is premised on the fact that unlike passwords, fingerprints are harder to guess or duplicate. Initially, fingerprint devices would be strategically located around the banking halls to restrict unauthorized personnel from accessing restricted areas.

Today, they are used to control virtually every financial service process including opening and securing bank accounts. Just recently, MasterCard, one of the largest credit and debit card distributors in the world hinted that plans are underway within the company to produce fingerprint enabled cards.

But fingerprints aren’t just replacing passwords in the banking industry alone, the emergence of smartphone devices with a finger ID as a sign in option further proves that these biometrics might soon phase out the use of passwords and PINs. The one major advantage of fingerprints in smartphones and banks is that it is secure and keeps things confidential.

Controlling immigration

You might have noticed that a fingerprint scan is currently a requirement almost every time you cross the country’s border. This is the case in all entry points into the country including seaports and land border points. The use of biometrics here by the government’s customs department helps with the fast and accurate identification of local and foreign travellers seeking to enter the country.

This security measure helps identify misfits and individuals with criminal histories trying to enter the country. It prevents terrorists from gaining ace to the country, and therefore, it keeps the country and her citizens safe. And when security is tight, the country’s economy is always blooming.

These devices also play a critical role in guarding the country’s citizens against identity theft. In the sense that while an individual may gain access to your social security and other identification documents necessary for the processing travel documents, they can’t access your fingerprints. Fingerprints shared from other countries can also help control the number of immigrants into the country by differentiating genuine asylum seekers from the rest.

Managing staff attendance

The adoption of fingerprint technology and demand for fingerprint devices by different businesses is constantly gaining trajectory. Today, most human resource professionals consider these biometrics a necessity, especially in institutions with a massive number of employees.

Managers use fingerprint technology to track each employee’s attendance and the time they check in and out in their respective departments. In addition to increasing efficiency, finger print technology reduces absenteeism and underperformance in the place of work.

However, further advancements in the fingerprint technology for the workplace have widened the scope of the use of this biometrics to cover productivity and accountability. This is made possible by devices with identity management and point of sales access features. Their implementation has proved vital in helping businesses eliminate thefts of company infrastructure while maximizing accuracy and returns on investments.

Enhancing personal and institutional security

The industry developers aren’t just interested in securing businesses and border points while leaving you exposed. In this sense, they have come up with numerous interactive fingerprint devices and technologies that change how you interact with some of your most prized and sentimental possessions. For instance, current smart home technologies that inform how you interact with your home have also included fingerprint access features.

For instance, you may need a finger ID to access the main entrance, access to different parts of the house and even to interact with different electrical devices around the house. This guarantees the security of you as well as your home. The same extends to your other equally important gadgets like personal vehicles as well as mobile phones.

Most importantly, the finger ID biometrics come in handy when accessing some of your sensitive information like bank services remotely where different smartphone applications require the finger ID authorization.

Bottom line

Fingerprint technology is currently impacting every area of human interaction. It affects how you interact with other people, with systems entrusted to you as well as your own systems. It has not only made access to services less stressful as you no longer have to worry about cramming pins and passwords but has also made it faster and even more secure. And no that this one of a kind technology is here with us, the best thing we can do is to embrace it.
