Bible verses about relationships
Relationships are complicated, and it can be hard to know where to turn for advice when you’re in one. So we’ve put together 22 Bible verses and what they mean to help you make sense of it all.
1. 1 Peter 4:8
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”
This Bible verse is pretty self-explanatory. Unconditional love in a romantic relationship helps you overlook past hurt, forgive, and push each other to be better people.
2. Proverbs 31:10-11
“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.”
Having a spouse that cares and understands you is a blessing, and this Bible verse about relationships explains it well.
3. Colossians 3:19
“Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.”
This doesn’t just apply to couples in marriage but also to individuals who are in a relationship.
4. Ephesians 4:2-3
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.”
This is one of my favorite Bible verses about relationships, and it’s pretty simple; be gentle with each other.
5. Genesis 2:18
“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Yes, you need a companion, but you can’t just go into a relationship with just anybody. What this Bible verse means is that you should find a significant other that is right for you.
6. James 1:19-20
“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
Anger destroys a lot of good relationships. So read this Bible verse when you’re angry at your boyfriend/girlfriend to help you calm down and think clearer.
7. Proverbs 18:24
“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
This one stresses the need to remain faithful to one partner. Keeping many partners might lead you to ruin.
8. John 13:34
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
Love is essential in your relationship. Simple.
9. Ecclesiastes 7:8-9
“Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.”
Similar to number six, anger might make you say hurtful things that can damage your relationship. So please keep it in check.
10. 1 Corinthians 6:18
“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”
This verse stresses the need to remain faithful to one partner and not get involved in sexual escapades outside your relationship.
11. Romans 12:19
“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
Whenever your partner hurts you, either by cheating or forgetting your anniversary, try not to nurture the thought of revenge. Forgive them if you can, and let the Lord repay them.
12. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
Relationships should be about pushing each other to be the best version of themselves.
13. Genesis 2:24
“Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
This is one of the best Bible verses about relationships that talks about the importance of compatibility. Your partner should be able to complete you.
14. Ephesians 4:29
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
Complement is important in every relationship. This verse tells you to guide your words and know what to say to your partner at the right time.
15. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-5
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud, or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wrong.”
This is one of the most popular verses on this list, and it needs no explanation.
16. 1 John 3: 18
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Telling your partner you love them doesn’t cut it. You have to show let it show in your actions.
17. 1 John 4: 18
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”
This verse talks about shooting your shot when you find the right one. Don’t be scared to work up to that special one and tell them how you feel because if you love them, the feeling is powerful enough to cast out fear.
18. Colossians 3: 13-14
“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”
This one talks about forgiveness in relationships. People sometimes make mistakes, and your partner is not different. So give room for mistakes and let your heart guide you when they ask for forgiveness.
19. 1 Corinthians 13: 6-7
“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”
There are times in your relationship where things might be rocky. Don’t give up. If your partner is willing, make sure to work through your issues together because “love never gives up.”
20. Romans 12: 10
“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
Always think of your partner’s feelings before you take any action.
21. Ecclesiastes 4:10
“If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
A romantic relationship is all about building each other to be the best versions of yourselves. So make sure to offer a shoulder that your partner can lean on when they are troubled.
22. Ephesians 4:26
Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.”
Your spouse can get on your nerves from time to time, and you’re right to get angry. But make sure to settle your differences before the day runs out.
