When you increase the performance, longevity, and handling of your tires by always making sure they are well maintained, not only will it help to make the drive much more comfortable, but it will also greatly improve your overall gas mileage.

Here are some useful ways that you can make note of and follow to help take great care of your car tires.

1. Always Check the Inflation Pressure Level

This is the one thing that is perhaps the most important to keep in mind when it comes to great tire maintenance. Generally, you will want to do this on two different occasions: every month and before you take any kind of long trip.

Not enough pressure

If your car tires do not have enough air in them, they can not only wear out much faster, but a whole host of issues can be created, including making the car much more difficult and even unsafe to handle while driving and increasing the overall amount of fuel consumption.

You should immediately look in your owner’s manual regarding the air level that is recommended the most for your car tires and drive to the nearest gas station to use their air machine.

As you fill the tires, stop periodically and use your tire gauge to continuously check the level to make sure you don’t go too far over or under.

Too much pressure

On the other hand, if your tires become over-inflated with air, this can create even more problems, with the most notable being tire blowouts.

If you end up putting too much air in your car tires, simply push the pin on the tire valve lightly to gradually let air out until you get to the level it should be at

Finally, for a long family road trip, you can bring a portable tire inflator, or an extra tire to prevent mishap in the middle of nowhere.

2. Track the Tread of Your Car Tires

It is recommended that your car tires be at 2/32″ deep for the safest amount of handling. In order to help remind you, the manufacturer of your vehicle will install “wear bars,” which are built-in tread wear indicators that will become visible once the treads of your car tires reach approximately 1/16″.

You will be able to tell immediately when you see these, as they look like strips of rubber.

3. Always Realign and Rotate Your Tires

It is generally recommended that you have this done approximately every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, as this will help balance out the amount of wear on all of your car tires, as well as preventing any kind of uneven deterioration.

If you do not do this, even something as simple as running over a pothole can cause your wheels to seriously fall out of alignment.

4. Keep an Eye Out for Any Tire Damage

If you spot anything in your car tires such as cuts, bulges, or punctures, make note of this immediately and take your car to the nearest auto repair shop to have it looked at. This will be easier to determine if the tires simply need to be patched or completely replaced.

5. Change All Tires Rather Than Just Some of Them

There’s really no way to avoid having to change car tires when the time comes. However, some individuals choose to only change two at a time as a way to save money; however, this is something that can create a big risk in the long run.

For example, if you only change the front two tires, you could find yourself fishtailing while making sharp turns in no time flat. On the other hand, if you only switch out the back two tires, you’ll put yourself at risk of losing traction during inclement weather conditions.

This is why it’s important to change all of your tires at the same time. You’ll still save money, only it’ll be from any kind of a costly accident. However, if you absolutely have to switch out only two car tires, experts recommend that you switch the back two tires

6. Have Your Tires Inspected

The actual longevity of a tire is dependent on many factors, for example your storage method, used inflation pressure, loading habits, speed, road hazard injury.

You should stay alert for visual appearance as well as any changes in tire performance such as increased air loss, noise or vibration. Therefore, it is essential to have tires, including spares, inspected on a regular basis by professionals.

Make sure you pay close attention to their testing process, as this can teach you what signals to look out for yourself.

Tire warranties

Some tire manufacturers, including Goodyear, Michelin, Continental, Dunlop and Kumho, offer special tire warranties, for road hazard and mileage, that include free tire inspections.

If you’re shopping for tires, make sure you take into consideration the extra services the tire brands or other tire providers offer.

7. Driving Habits That Can Make Your Tires Last Longer

  • Obey all posted speed limits
  • Avoid any and all sudden movements, such as stops, turns, and starts
  • Don’t rub up against any concrete curbs while parking your car
  • Don’t overload your car

As soon as you start paying more attention to your tires, you will immediately saved a considerable amount of money on repair costs, and increased the safety of your family car.
