Every month there is a lot to celebrate, whether it is a specific holiday or not. The same is true for the month of May. Not only are there causes to celebrate the whole month, but there are specific days in May we celebrate.

I bet you are sitting there thinking, hmm, what do we celebrate in May? And if you have come up with anything, the two you have probably come up with are May Day and Mother’s Day.

Or maybe you were able to come up with more than these two and are much better at celebrations than me.  Anyway let me begin by looking at what causes are devoted to celebrating the entire month so you and your kids can organize some celebrations to have fun with.

National Salad Month is a month devoted to salads. So get out your recipes or look up some new ones and get crazy with making salads. Wouldn’t this be a great way to fit more salads into your meals? Why not experiment with the kids to come up with some new salad dressings.

Let the kids do this (with your guidance, of course, so you aren’t wasting ingredients) and let them name the dressing they come up with after themselves. Or perhaps they can give it a name based on what it is made of. The most important thing is to get them involved.

It’s National Hamburger Month! Think of all of the things you can do with hamburgers! Probably one of the first things that comes to mind is barbecue and this may be why May is also National Barbecue Month which I will talk about next.

Just like salads, hamburger lends itself well to creations that you and your kids can come up. Why not have a few friends over and have a creative burger barbecue?  Get that grill up and running and provide the burgers and have everyone bring something that can be put on them.

Things like onions, mushrooms, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and anything else you think of.  Let everyone build their own perfect burger. Remember to experiment. The burgers don’t just have to be made out of beef; why not try chicken, turkey, mushroom (portabella) or grain burgers. The only thing holding you and your kids back are your imaginations.

Nothing like a barbecue for National Barbecue Month, now is there?  Why not get those hamburgers together, those new salad dressings and lovely fruit salads and have an outdoor barbecue?

Do you sense a theme of how all of these monthly celebrations fit together? You don’t just have to barbecue meat either; this would be a great time to show your children that there are plenty of other things that you can barbecue.

What about those peppers, pineapples, mushrooms and just about any veggie or fruit you want to try?  Experiment with what you barbecue as well as what barbecue sauces you use. Once again get those kids involved.

It’s National Photography Month, too. It’s hard to believe that it also photography month because what fun would it be celebrating all the rest of these things if you don’t get pictures? Why not get pictures of all the kids’ and your creations and have the kids make a scrap book. Label each picture with the name of the concoction as well as who came up with it.

In the winter when you are looking for something to do while you are waiting out another winter storm, pull out the scrapbook and you can reminisce about all the fun you had coming up with these concoctions. If you are looking for more to photograph make sure you take some photographs of your family bike ride, because yes, you guessed it, it is also National Bike Month.

Now that you have celebrated the entire month by eating salads and barbecue, maybe it’s time you all get on your bikes and go for a family bike ride to get a little exercise. Make sure you all have helmets.

Set out a route for you to follow, making sure that it is not too long for the youngest of the riders. Bring water and snacks and plan on stopping somewhere along the way to stop and smell the roses, have a snack, and of course get some photographs for the scrapbook the kids are working on.

Hopefully all of these May celebrations will make your family get involved and share some of these things together. You can choose to do just one or you can string them together as I suggested. The important thing is to be flexible, use your imagination and have fun.
