It is always an exciting experience to welcome a kitten into the family. Whether you didn’t know your cat was pregnant and you woke up to see some cute little felines, or maybe someone brought you one as a present.

No matter what the circumstance of the baby cat’s arrival is, the first 30 days with your new kitten is usually a month of changes, and to make these changes go smoothly there is so much you can do.

What to do before bringing your kitten home?

Bambino kitten

If you have plans of bringing a new kitten to your home, then you must set out some time to prepare for the arrival of your pet. Gather together all the items you think your kitten will be needing and have them arranged in your home so that other pets and people around you will get familiar with the items and start adjusting to them.

You can diffuse pheromones before the arrival of your baby feline so that both the older ones and the new ones can feel relaxed and calm. Even if you already have a cat in your home, see to it that the kitten has its own bed, food, dish for water, and plenty of car friendly toys to play with.

If you do not have a small room to spare you can set up a bathroom with all these items for your feline to live in during the first few days in its new place of abode. Make sure that every cat in your home has one extra litter box and avoid any direct line of sight between the litter boxes.

Extra litter as well as some kitten food will be very essential if you must have your kittens feeling at home.

Day 1: Your kitten’s first day in its new home.

The first day with your new kitten is usually a very exciting one but you must be careful so you don’t overwhelm the cute little animal. Allow the kitten explore in the small room or bathroom that you have already set up for it to live in.

If it happens that you did not have enough time to prepare a place for your new kitten, set a safe space or room and sit on the floor as you watch it explore and get used to its new living area.

If you have other pets in your home, it is safe to allow them sniff the new guy as long as they do that while you are holding the kitten. Make sure to keep the kitten safe at all times especially in the presence of other pets.

When you can’t supervise your new kitten, place it with its belongings in the small room you have reserved for it. That way no body gets hurt and you are rest assured that this kitten isn’t going to get into any troubles.

See to it that the litter boxes are accessible to the kitten and it also has enough food and water. Also keep in the room the carrier on which you brought it home, so that it is available if your kitten feels like sleeping or maybe crawling into it to feel safe.

Day 10: The tenth day your new kitten spends in your home.

After a few days, your baby cat will have explored it’s new place of abode and will have become familiar with where it’s food, water dish, and also it’s litter box is located. The kitten may have become so relaxed that it claims a special spot for itself and even become friends with some of the other pets in your home.

Make sure that your kitten eats and drinks enough and also monitor their litter box activities during this time. If you notice any loose stools, parasite, or blood in their litter box, it is the best choice if you decide to take a sample of the stool to your vet.

Regardless of what the situation may be you will have to make an appointment during this period to have your kitten checked out.

If you would like for your kitten to wear a collar, see to it that you choose a collar that fits and include some identification like a phone number or name tag just incase your kitten finds its way outside your house.

You can also consider discussing microchipping with your vet as that is a more permanent means of identification. Microchipping is a more expensive but reliable form of identification because if your animal gets lost or stolen, it can’t be taken out.

Day 30: One month of lots of love and bonding between you and your cat.

So by the 30th day it has already become one month since you welcomed the newest animal member of your family. That is more than enough time for your cat to adjust enough to start eating, drinking, and using the litter box correctly.

Your cat should be settling into its new home nicely and you should be able to observe the climbing, scratching of surface, and wrestling.

If your kitten begins to exhibit some characters that you find unavoidable or potentially dangerous, this is the right time to check and correct them before the little guy grows up and gets worse.

Provide your kitten safe toys to play with, safe places to climb, and also a surface to scratch. Entice the feline to the areas where you want it to play with treats and catnips.

You should also have taken your kitten to the vet at least once in the first one month for a fecal check, vaccines, and also a physical examination. Ensure that you do not take your kitten out with you to any where that isn’t the vets office until it has been vaccinated fully and you are sure it is healthy.

Make sure to also stay on schedule with all the recommended initial vaccines and also talk to your vet about any monthly preventatives for heart worms, fleas, intestinal parasites and other harmful things.

You have no reason to panic if you have other cats who are not yet getting along fine with your new kitten. That is going to take some time and one month just isn’t long enough.
