Have you been in a situation of no return, where you think there is no other way than starting afresh? Well, I have, and I know you have too even though it might not involve a PS4 console.

Well, before we begin, I think you should know that resetting your PS4 console will completely wipe the hard drive of your console and also remove its system software, taking it back to its factory settings. Resetting a ps4 comes in handy when your console has a glitch or refused to boot up or when you want to start again by deleting all the data in it.

The first precaution you should take is to always keep a backup of any data on your console before carrying out a reset. You can choose to back up on your data on an external drive or cloud storage. To back up data on cloud storage on PS4, you need to have a PlayStation Plus account.

When you’re in this situation, there are two different ways you can bail from it. The first is from the console’s dashboard while the other is in Safe Mode (only if the console has boot-up related issues). In this article, we will talk about the different ways you can factory reset your ps4 console.

How To Factory Reset a PS4 Console

Follow the simple steps below to factory reset your PS4 console.

Sign Back Into Your Console to Access Settings Menu

To sign back into your PS4 console, start by going to the Settings menu and search for the ‘PlayStation Network/Account Management’ option. Remove the machine as your primary PlayStation 4.

That will allow you to play downloaded games offline as it will identify it as yours. Note that missing this step will require you to come across different problems when you try to login to your new console.

Go Ahead and Deactivate Your Console

To deactivate your console, navigate to ‘Activate as your primary PS4.’ this will make sure that your PS4 is activated. Still, if your PS4 has already been activated, the Activate option will be greyed out, and the Deactivate button will be the only clickable button. Select ‘Deactivate’ and then select yes on the next screen that will pop up.

Sign Back Into Your Console Using Your User Account

This step is different from your PS4 account, so be careful. Once you are signed in, proceed to the settings menu once again.

Navigate To the Initialization Options in the Settings Section

For this section, you should look out for two options, Restore Default Settings and initialize PS4. The first option will erase any saved settings data and then return the PS4 to its factory setting but bear in mind that it won’t format your hard drive.

While the second option will delete the data on your drive, including saved game data, downloaded games, and any other thing you have added to the console since its purchase. This option will take your PS4 back to its perfect condition (out of the box settings).

Select Full on the Initialize Screen

This section is about data wiping. Here you have two options. The ‘Quick’ option is fast, while the ‘Full’ option takes a long time, probably a couple of hours or more.

Once you have initialized the wipe using any of the options stated above, the PS4 console will present you with a progress bar which will indicate the expected time it will take to finish. When the process is done, you will be able to set up your PS4 the exact way you did the first time you purchased it. But if you are looking to sell it off, you need to hand it over with no data attached.

How to Reset Your Ps4 Console from Safe Mode

This process is advisable if you are having a problem with your system software or other errors that prevent you from accessing your Settings menu to reinitialize your PS4. If you are in that mess, then you are left with Safe Mode. To use safe mode to reset your console, please follow the steps below:

Turn Off Your PS4 Console

Turn off your power completely on your PS4 to boot into Safe Mode. Remember not to set your console to Rest Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, follow the next step.

Hold Down the Power Button until Your Hear Two Beeps

For this to happen, you need to push the power button on the console rather than using your controller. Hold the power button for about eight seconds, and you will hear a beep before it boots into Safe mode. It will be labelled, and you will notice it by its black background.

Select the Reset Option You Need

Once you are in the Safe Mode, you can choose the reset option you want. I recommend ‘Restore default Settings’ because it will reset the PS4 to its original software setting and also keep your data while at it. Preferably, you can choose ‘Initialize PS4’.

Selecting Restore Default Settings will wipe your console hard drive and restore it to its factory settings, but it will keep your system software, that is, its operating system (OS). But you can fall back to ‘Initialize PS4’ option, which is a fuller factory reset that will require you to reinstall the operating system.

Choose Initialize Ps4 If You Come Across Any Software Related Problems

Using the ‘Initialize’ option will restore your console hard drive and software settings to its factory settings, but it will leave the operating system intact. It’s similar to the one above where you will be above to choose between Quick and Full initializations.

How to Reinstall System Software on PS4 Console

Download an official PS4 firmware

To get an official PS4 firmware, get on your laptop/PC and download the latest system software from the PlayStation website.

Once the firmware is downloaded on your PC, you will need a medium to transfer the data to the PS4, so it’s advisable you get an external drive with a USB connection. Alternatively, you can use a USB drive with sufficient space to accommodate the firmware.

On Your USB Device, Create a New Folder and Name It PS4

Inside the newly created folder, create another folder and name it ‘UPDATE’ (it must be in capital letters). Then save the firmware you’ve downloaded into the UPDATE folder. Make sure the file you downloaded is named ‘PS4UPDATED.PUP’ when you saved it.

Boot up The PS4 into Safe Mode

To boot your PS4 into Safe Mode, please follow the steps earlier mentioned.

And finally, choose Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) on your PS4

Follow the prompt instructions. The console will erase all data, including the system software, and then it will require you to insert the USB device you saved the update firmware for reinstalling the system software. When the whole process is completed, your PS4 console will be returned to its old glory (factory settings).

With this article, you should be able to fix your PS4 whenever you come across any system software related issues by factory reset and reinstalling a new firmware.
