We already know that Macs have excellent battery life. And also the newest line of MacBook’s are supposed to run straight 7 hours straight without needing charging. But what if left your MagSafe charger at home, and you know you are going to be requiring 9-10 hours of work hours?

In this article, we’ll be talking about the obvious and not so obvious tip to get the longest workable uptime on a single charge.

Do you use your MacBook regularly? Because most people do not. It’s on by default, and most of them don’t bother or even know how to turn it off. Leaving it will drain the precious battery power because the wireless radio is still turned on. Turn it off and keep it off until you need it.

If you are not accessing the internet why are you keeping your Wi-Fi on? Switch off AirPort. Just like Bluetooth. Only this one is more useful, and you will likely get to turn it back on.

A high sound from your speakers can consume a lot of battery power, so it’s advisable to mute the sound of your Mac unless you need it. There are different sound notifications made by OS X and your applications. When you are trying to squeeze the most out of your battery, even the little things will matter.

Switchable Graphics

If your Mac has switchable graphic’s chips that do not switch off automatically, make sure you are using the better battery life setting. Because this affects some of the previous 15′ and 17′ MacBook Pros. if you don’t have this option, then you have auto-switching graphics, or you only have just one graphics chip.

Energy Saving Setting

Navigate to the Energy Saver Preferences window and make adjustments to reduce the wasted energy.

Screen Backlight

Reduction of screen brightness will help to manage battery power so try as much as possible to reduce the intensity of your screen when it’s necessary. But make sure you can still see the items on your display comfortably; otherwise, you will put a lot of stress on your eyes.

Keyboard Backlight

Backlight keyboards are fantastic because it makes it easier for you to locate keys on your keyboard in a dark environment. Though it’s a luxury when you are after a long battery life. If you notice that it comes on, it’s either you reduce it to the minimum setting or switch it off and use the touch screen to type.

The optical disk drive consumes the battery on every laptop. It has got moving parts. So don’t use it unless it’s necessary. Verify if it’s empty so your Mac won’t recurrently spin it up to check the contents.

Close unused apps

Minimise the number of active applications running on your laptop. Even when you are not actively working in the app, close it because it may still be performing background tasks or communicating with the internet. Always make sure that you close apps that you are not working with.

Install ClicktoFlash

Flash is handy; Flash players are ubiquitous around the internet for video playback. But flash also uses a very high amount of your system’s resources, and it cuts the battery life substantially. So if you are browsing the internet while on battery power, you might want to make sure that you are using something like Flashblock for Firefox or ClickToFlash for Safari. Flash will be blocked, but you can enable individual Flash objects on demand.

Avoid doing resource intensive tasks

Try to avoid doing resource intensive task while you are on battery power, always remember to prioritise your work making sure that you are doing the light work such as browsing or text editing on battery power and leaving the heavy duty stuff such as video conversions for when you are plugged in. Because let’s face it, if your battery goes flat before you achieve your aim and unable to get to your charger on time, you can’t do any work at all.

External devices

Unplug every external device such as USB thumb drives or external drives unless you need them. USB, Firewire and Thunderbolt device all draw from your computer and will have an impact on your computer system.

Check battery health

If you have followed these suggestions given and you still have a short battery life, you might be trying to perform a resource-intensive task. Or maybe its time to get a replacement battery. Click on the Apple logo on the top left of your screen and select About This Mac, go ahead to click on the More Info button and then select Power from the list given to you on the left. You will see the health status of your battery, and it will alert you if it’s time to get a replacement.

Note: Removable batteries can be bought, and swapped by yourself. Integrated batteries need to be replaced by Apple.
