With the summer coming to an end, the new school year is about to start. Your kids spent time mostly carelessly running, playing, and having fun all the time.


Now it’s time for them to get serious, organize their days and deal with a lot of school obligations. This transition should not happen abruptly. This means that you need to mentally prepare your kids for the new school year.

Instead of suddenly putting an end to their endless fun and relaxation, you need to find a strategy to help them make a more gentle transition. If you need some help in achieving this, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

Here’s what you can do to ensure your child is mentally prepared for the new school year.

1. Show Enthusiasm

Starting a new school year can be scary and intimidating for children, especially for first graders.

Adults tend to talk about school like it’s something they should be afraid of or they shouldn’t be looking forward to.

The first step in getting your kids mentally prepared for school is to avoid talking about it in a negative way:

  • You’ll see once the school year starts!
  • Your teacher won’t be as tolerant as me.

Instead, encourage them to  look forward to going to school be talking about:

  • All the friends they’ll see and meet
  • All the things they’ll learn
  • How much you miss your days as a student

Make sure school is always brought up as something positive and fun.

2. Visit the School

If your child is worried about not being familiar with the school building, children, or teachers, you could organize for them to go and visit the school.


Make it unofficial and just go for a walk by the school. Tell them what’s inside and ask if they want to take a look.

In addition, some schools organize orientations:

  • Tour of the school
  • Meeting the teachers
  • Meeting other students
  • Learning about school activities, holidays, and tradition

Take advantage of the school orientation day and take your child to make them more relaxed about the upcoming academic year.

3. Get in Shape

As the school year approaches, you need to get your kids to slow down with all the wild summer adventures, and start thinking about their responsibilities.

This means that you need to:

  • Talk about their schedule
  • Limit screen time
  • Get them to organize their school things
  • Prepare them for a more organized lifestyle

Don’t make a big deal out of the whole thing, but try to find a way to cool things down and get them ready for what’s coming.

4. Shopping for School

Kids love shopping and getting them things for school is something that could cheer them up.

Make sure they’re actively involved in the entire process of preparing for school and getting the things they need.

Here’s what you can do together:

  • Make a list of the things your kids need
  • Include everything from school supplies, materials, books, clothes, etc.
  • Set up a date for shopping
  • Go shopping and have fun

Your kids are going to anticipate going to school and look forward to bring their new stuff.


5. Practice the Schedule

If you want to be absolutely certain your kids won’t find school time stressful, you can help them practice their school schedule a couple of days before the school starts.

This means that you should:

  • Get them up in the morning and get them to bed at night at a specific time
  • Try determining the best time of day for homework
  • Practice group activities by signing them up for an end-of-summer course

Get them to feel the school spirit before school actually starts and let them see how it’s perfectly manageable and pleasant.

6. Discuss Fears

Finally, there’s one more thing you need to discuss with your kids. Their fears might be making them anxious about going to school.

It’s your job to get them to talk about their problems openly and discuss solutions in case the problems occur.
Make sure they are the one leading the conversation. Don’t bring up any potential problems that they didn’t even think of. This will cause additional stress.

Together, you might cover things such as:

  • Lack of school friends
  • Bullying
  • Rejection
  • Academic success or failure

Make sure they have your support and you give them guidance in case any of this happens.
