If you have been looking for an alternative to the shared hosting plan you have, you may have come across VPS hosting plan. You may already know that VPS is one of the best plans to choose if you want more data security, more control over the servers and a better performance in terms of speed on your website.

But what is VPS and how do you choose the right VPS service provider for your needs? To understand what VPS is, it is essential to describe how it works and how different it is from shared hosting.

VPS hosting is where a website is hosted on a virtual private server on more powerful hardware. The physical server is divided into virtual compartments and software is set up on each compartment separately to result in a capable single functioning unit.

Therefore, even though the websites are hosted on the same physical server, each one is allocated resources separately. This essentially means that the other websites on the server will not affect the performance of your website since each website is allocated its own server resources including CPU, RAM and disk space.

Choosing the Right VPS Hosting Provider

You know you are ready to move to a UK VPS when your website is getting heavy traffic that your current shared hosting plan is having trouble handling or you are concerned about the safety of your data.

But how do you choose the right VPS hosting provider? The following factors can help you make the right choice;

Windows vs. Linux

The first step is to determine the type of VPS environment you will run. Linux has its advantages but if your website is running on ASP or ASP.net, you will need to run on a Windows environment.

Managed vs. Unmanaged

With VPS hosting, you get access to the whole server and you must therefore determine who will monitor its performance.

You can choose a managed plan where you allow the VPS hosting provider to monitor the server for you or you can choose the unmanaged option where you make arrangements to monitor the server yourself.

Each of these options is advantageous in its own ways but you may want to choose the managed option if you don’t want to deal with additional cost of monitoring your own servers.

Scalability

The VPS hosting provider you choose has to have the hardware capability to handle sudden increased loads on the server. Without this scalability it would be impossible for you to reap the full benefits of the VPS server.

That’s because sufficient hardware capabilities translate into higher uptime and consistent performance which means unlimited growth.

Price

The purchase price is a consideration and there are as many packages with different price points as there are VPS hosting providers.

It is however important to avoid choosing a provider only based on the price. The cheapest VPS hosting provider may not have all the features you need.
