Huawei has spent the last 5 years surprising us with their flagship phones. A surprise that has set them aside and on top of their competitors in China and its environs.

Their last year’s flagship, the P10 was very well welcomed by Huawei phone users and it really sank in properly. These year’s P20 could either give the same experience or would it be another cliché smartphone in the market in 2018? There’s only one way to know.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Huawei P20 and P20 pro. First of all let us point out one funny thing that Huawei had twisted our brains up with, the naming scheme. Everybody thought the phone will be named the P11 and P11 pro which, on the norm sounds more like the successor of last year’s P10. But Huawei used the name P20 and P20 pro skipping a whole lot of numbers, are they really counting in 10s now?

Let’s spare a few lines and one paragraph to talk about the P20 lite which got announced in Poland and Italy. It wasn’t made available globally as this P20 and P20 Pro is going to be.

Being the P20 pro though make the phone the larger plus variant but its pro additional name comes from the fact that it packs more functionality These year’s Huawei P20 brings a lot to the table, it comes in three variants, the Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Pro and a Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS.

Body and design:

The body of this phone wasn’t made from aluminum, which was the sole body previous Huawei phones are made from. But now we are getting more of glass on the body than aluminum. The phone features an all-glass design that has finely cut curved sides on all the four edges.

The aspect ratio is 18:9 meaning that the display stretched pretty much towards the edges.

These time around, Huawei didn’t try to be so frugal when it comes to body color, but this time around we have a wide variety of colors to choose from. These colors include black, midnight blue, pinkish gold, and twilight.

Each of the colors though, have this tendency to change color while you tilt the phone around. It should be worth letting you know that these colors are interesting and they are colors you should be quite interested in.

Another thing to take note on, on the new Huawei P20 and P20 pro is the fact that the phone is getting a notch. The notch will be more like that of Apple’s iPhone X than that of the essential phone. If you can remember the last year’s version vividly, it bears a strike resemblance to Apple’s iPhone but that’s just that.

All the three variants have fingerprint sensors which can be located at the bottom of the phone.

CPU: Kirin processors 970
Memory: 6GB of RAM/ 128GB for the Pro and the Mate RS and 4GB RAM on the plain P20. The Porsche design comes with either 256GB and 512GB (The first smartphone to feature such a large memory.
Micro SD storage: No variant has any form of media storage
Display size: 6.1 –inch OLED on the Pro and Porsche design while its plain variant is 5.8-inch LCD screen.
Resolution: 2,240 X 1080p
Connectivity: Bluetooth, NFC
Battery: 4000mAh on the P20 Pro and Porsche Mate’s variant while the plain P20 has 3,400 mAh.
Size: 155 mm X 73.9 mm X 7.65 mm
Weight: 180g
OS: Android 8.1 Oreo. Runs on the latest version of EMUI, Huawei’s customer interface.
IP rating: IP52 rating for the plain version which means it can only put up a little resistance to dust and water, while the Pro has IP67 and the Porsche is still yet to be released.

If you can notice the two variants of the P20 are almost the same thing apart from the screen size which showed that the Huawei P20 Pro is quite larger than the normal P20.

What could actually different these two phones from each other? It’s here, we are going to look at that next on the next segment of these post, the camera.

Face Unlock: This technology is gradually making its way into the limelight. It will be seen more often on 2018 smartphone releases but in different iterations of Samsung’s facial recognition and Apple’s own too. Huawei also added it to these new phones. Huawei’s implementation uses 2-D mapping to authenticate users in just half a second.

Huawei has been making good smartphone cameras since it entered into a partnership with Leica. And when you are a smartphone company and you have this company working on your product’s Camera, your Camera will always be top notch.

With this, Huawei was able to make the P20’s camera into a pretty awesome piece, adding impressive new hardware and software features.

What could really make Huawei P20 Pro a pro device and give it an edge over the normal P20, let’s talk about that?

The P20 Pro and the Huawei Porsche design Mate RS will be the first smartphone on the surface of the earth to spot three camera lenses. These camera sensors collectively have a total of 40MP with A.I image stabilization (AIS). Among the three lenses, each secondary camera spots an 8MP each with optical image stabilization, while the tertiary lens is a 20MP mono lens. Each lens bears a different aperture from f/1.6 to f/2.0, which means you should be able to get good and sharp shots in just about any type of condition.

While that’s all for the rear camera, although there are so many things to explain, that will be a different post altogether.

The front-facing Selfie camera of the P2o and Porche design Huawei Mate RS is 24 megapixels and like the rear lenses, this one was equally branded by Leica. It features an aperture f2.0, which is quite good but not in the places with low light.

The Huawei P20 spots a dual rear camera array with 12MP primary lens and a 20MP monochrome and secondary lens. The lens that’s seen as the primary lens has an aperture of f/1.8 while the secondary lens spots a f/1.6 which will work perfectly by getting pretty good shots under low light. You will also be getting the same technology used for the 24MP Leica-branded camera that appeared on the P20 Pro.

Did we make mention of hardware and software right? In addition to Huawei ’s most impressive hardware, software wise, we are getting an A.I to make image adjustments based on object recognition. This software is a decent improvement to the one found on Huawei P10 which can enable the previous flagship to discern between 13 different scene recognition modes, these year’s flagship can perform 19 on different common scenes.

Also, you remember the super slow motion feature on Samsung Galaxy S9’s camera, you can find it on these phones too. With super slow motion you can increase your camera’s frame rate to 960fps for 0.2 seconds and also get a matrix-like effect.

Pricing and Availability:

The smartphone has been announced on 27th March. All three phones are now available in the different price ranges below:

Huawei P20 Pro: $1,115

Huawei Mate RS Porche Design Edition:  $2,103 (256GB)
