IP68: Definition, Comparison and Classifications

IP68

Definition of IP68

IP68 is the highest level of water-resistance of the connection.

IP67 vs. IP68: which device is best for you?

If you are fighting between IP67 and IP68, you will be happy to know that both devices will have complete dust-resistance.

The IP67 device supports up to 1 m of water for 30 minutes. For a device with an IP68 protection rating, in addition to dust-resistance, it will also use full immersion in more than one meter of water for a period specified by the device manufacturer.

The difference comes down to exposure to water. Samsung Galaxy S9 + has an IP68 protection rating, which, according to Samsung, protects against immersion in 1.5 mm of water for 30 minutes without the case and other accessories.

More and more device manufacturers incorporate some form of dust and water-resistance, which is a welcome change. Still, you don’t want to throw your phone into a nearby pond just for fun.

When it comes to smartphones and smartwatches, it’s almost always about their water-resistance. It cannot survive indefinitely in the water.
