Let’s put the Apple’s iPhone X up against Google’s Pixel 2XL and see which one of them is going to topple the other to become the winner in this comparison blog post.

As we all know, Apple produced a beastly smartphone in the iPhone X and Google also produced a monstrous smartphone in Pixel 2 XL.

Although it’s 2018 and the two smartphones will soon be losing their flagship status, they still remain among the most talked about smartphones in the whole world.

To carry out this comparison we are going to compare them both using 5 different parameters which include;

  • The Design
  • Camera
  • Display
  • Performance
  • Miscellaneous

Every smartphone manufacturer has one goal in mind and that’s to produce rectangularly shaped smartphones that its design is exceptional and its users will find pleasing to the eye. iPhone X and Google Pixel 2XL isn’t an exception.

Let’s start with iPhone X.

If you’ve not held an iPhone X before, it’s just like holding just a screen. With the notch at the top which might create a distortion for you while watching a video on full screen. The notch was there to create a surface whereby the ear speaker and the front-facing camera will be placed; while trying to create a full infinity display, reducing the bezels to the lowest minimum.

At the bottom, the phone is completely devoid of buttons (the normal circular shaped Apple’s home button is nowhere to be found).

The glass on the back makes the phone feel really nice and makes it look more like a premium phone that it is; Apple claims the glass is the strongest glass ever to be found on any smartphone on earth (you don’t want to experiment on that, replacing the glass cost nearly half the price of the phone)

The side is made up of a shiny bent material. What I don’t like about the design of the Apple’s iPhone is the camera hump on the back. A smartphone like this should be able to lie flat on the table and not wobbling around when it’s lying on its back.

Meanwhile, on the Pixel 2, the design is not meant for everybody. The smartphone won’t make it to the table if we are checking based on the recent trend of bezel-less devices. The bezels at the top and bottom make it possible to get front-facing speakers and other useful sensors that a Google comfortably left there while other smartphones that are bezel-less will struggle with that.

Turning the phone to the rear, you will get the fingerprint sensor which inherits the color of the back of the phone; creating a somehow incredible appearance.

On the camera side, Google was a little bit merciful here with the hump and made it be very little.

When it comes to design; seeing the type of design these two phones have put into their smartphones, I will pick the iPhone X as the winner for this category.

Smartphone camera’s being among one of the first things users check up on while trying to get a new phone, smartphone manufacturers give so much attention to the camera.

These two smartphones have an incredible camera setup.

The iPhone X have double 12 megapixels on the back for a wide angle and telephoto experience. While being the same setup on the iPhone 8 plus, the orientation is quite different.

On the iPhone X, the color saturation is quite pleasant and pictures taken on this smartphone will always come out generally good.

Taking videos on the smartphone is also sweet, especially videos in 4K which has been shown to be so stable even if you are running or speeding with your smartphone.

The front camera, being the camera user’s use the most, Apple used a 2-dept sensor here used for the face ID and it also enables portrait mode.

This camera when compared to a normal smartphone looks quite okay, but wait until you see that of Google Pixel 2 and 2XL before you conclude who is more of a bad ass here.

The Google Pixel has a single 12-megapixel camera on the back.

The pictures in normal light look incredible without being saturated. The camera also proved itself in low light, and also in direct sunlight. There’s hardly any scenario you throw on this camera that it won’t produce an incredible and perfect photo.

Video on 4K, the camera kept its cool at 30 fps and portrait mode is also incredible.

The 8-megapixel front camera is the camera that this smartphone boost of, it uses machine learning to blur out your background perfectly, something that the iPhone X’s front camera makes a mess out of and the machine learning gets better and better as you use it.

When it comes to front facing portrait shots, the Pixel is the elder brother to the iPhone X so, we give the award for this category to Google’s Pixel 2XL.

Here is another part of a smartphone that’s very important and manufacturers put in so much attention here.

The smartphone industry is currently experiencing an OLED war and Apple just ventured into it recently with the iPhone X and it’s already kicking asses.

The iPhone X’s 5.8 OLED display panel is really a job well done for Apple despite coming in new into this competition. It’s extra tall and a little bit awkward to hold for the first time, but you will get used to it as time goes by. It has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, 458 PPI and a 2436 X 1125 screen resolution meaning that while the PPI isn’t that great compared to the Pixel, there’s plenty of pixels here to make the display look nice. The balance of color saturation is nice and while you might experience a slight color shifting at some angles, the display is just great.

The Pixel 2XL rocks a 6-inch OLED display panel that has 18:9 aspect ratio, 538 PPI, and 2880 X 1440 screen resolution. The downside to the Pixel smartphone is a blue hue at the side of the smartphone and while it might sit well with some people’s eye, it will be uncomfortable for the majority. The Pixel phone’s display will get better with updates. In comparison, the iPhone X wins in this category.

As I mentioned above, the two smartphones are both kings of speed and Google and Apple have done an incredible job on the processors.

In everyday usage, either of them will give you more than the speed you need from a 2017/2018 smartphone.

We are running a comparison right, so we have to find the best among the two and the only way to do that is go down to the benchmarks.

The iPhone X is rocking Apple’s A11 Bionic processor. Which has a 2 high power cores and 4 low power cores, 3GB OF RAM (Although Apple is quite discreet about exposing the amount of RAM on their smartphones)

iPhone X

The Pixel uses the Snapdragon 835 which has a 4 high power cores and 4 low power cores coupled with 4GB OF RAM.

Google Pixel 2 XL

Looking at the figures above you will settle that the Pixel will outperform iPhone X, but geek bench’s analysis will prove your assumption wrong.

The iPhone got a single score of 4327 and a multi-core score of 10,842 but the Pixel 2 XL got a single score of 1898 and a multi-core score of 6,356.

Geek bench analysis of Pixel 2 XL and iPhone X

Looking at the numbers, you will see that, notwithstanding the RAM and core power used on iPhone X’s A11 bionic chip, Apple did a great job in optimizing the processor.

Although Geekbench is not known for telling all the stories, at least its analysis goes deeper into what our naked eyes and knowledge can comprehend. What matters most is the user’s experience and the two phones perform quite well in that aspect.

So, the award for this category will be awarded to iPhone X, all thanks to Apple’s new beastly A11 bionic chip.

let’s head to the little things that make different incredible phones stand out from each other. These are where each manufacturer tries to freestyle and showcase the power of their innovations.

While a lot of people that will buy the iPhone X will do so because they are already enjoying the Apple’s ecosystem, the iMessage, the Apple pay, car play and so on. But the smartphone on its own packs a lot of goodies on its own. The owners will be getting wireless charging, IP67 water, and dust resistant capability. Face ID makes it even more enticing and Apple also promises a really quick update dished out for this device.

While the iPhone X will be bringing a lot to the table, the Pixel 2 XL is will not be lagging behind either. Google really spent a lot of time on this phone. You will be getting a really good speaker for a smartphone, a very fast quick charging, a nice price of $840 and finally, the Google goodies which include the Google assistant, the squeeze on the side to activate the assistant and the android pay.

No notch at the top for those of us that will always say a NO-NO to notches and also an IP67 water and dust resistant. In addition, the nice aluminum builds on the back which makes the Pixel 2 appear more durable.

Final Bullet

While the iPhone X takes the lead in this comparison I will still pick a Google Pixel 2 XL smartphone. The Apple fans will want to put a bullet into my skull but are calm, picking Pixel 2 XL is a personal thing. The bottom truth is that, if any individual should settle for any of this smartphone, he/she has got a very nice smartphone.
