Although most people confuse them with the German Shepherd Dog for many obvious reasons, these dogs are more rectangular in profile and have lighter-bones with a more refined head than the German Shepard.

The Malinois is red, grey, or fawn in color with black shading on the tips of their hair. The tails of this dogs are usually darker or have a black tip, and they have a black mask face and ears that are mostly black.

The adult dogs of this breed measure between 61-66cm, and their females grow between 56-61cm. They also weigh around 27.5-28.5kg.

Some of the qualities of the dog breed are:

  • Extra training required
  • Enjoys vigorous walks
  • Dog suitable for experienced owners
  • Large dog
  • Some drool
  • Enjoys walking more than two hours a day
  • Needs grooming every other day
  • Non Hypoallergenic breed
  • Chatty and vocal dog
  • Guard dog. Barks and alerts
  • May require training to live with kids
  • May require training to live with other pets

Origin

The Malinois is only one of the Belgian Shepherd Dog’s four different varieties: the Tervueren, Groenendael, Laekenois, and Malinois.

Each of these breeds are named after the part of Belgium from which they came. Several hard-working sheepdogs from Belgium were recognized since the Middle Ages.

A professor of the Belgian School of Veterinary Sciences recorded some standards for the different types of Belgian sheepdogs. The professor noted that they all the sheepdogs were similar in type, with the primary difference being their coat.

The Professor further divided the dogs into some varieties and advised separately. The Malinois breed of dog was the very first of the different Belgian sheepdogs to get a type and also breed true to this. Malinois was also the first to breed to get famous.

Personality

The Malinois is a dog breed that loves everyone, but it’s not a dog breed for people who want ‘just a dog.’ This breed is a devoted, affectionate companion who will offer maximum protection to his home and family but also needs an experienced owner.

As with every dog breed with a guarding tendency, we do not advise owners to encourage their guarding instincts at a young age, as they may begin to guard you in a situation that does not require policing.

The natural guarding instincts of these dogs will kick in if and when needed.

Health

These dogs are usually very healthy, but as with many dog breeds, every variety of the Belgian may suffer from hip dysplasia (a health challenge that can cause mobility problems) and some hereditary eye disorders.

It is, therefore, essential to carry out eye testing and hip scoring of these dogs before breeding.

Exercise

Malinois are lovers of activity; thus, they need two hours or more of daily training, exercise, and mental stimulation. Highly trainable, this dog can excel at obedience, agility, and other canine ‘sports.’

If what you are looking for is an active dog, these are very active canines and should not be seen as pets if you want to be left alone all day.

Nutrition

This one is a large breed of dogs, so it has a huge appetite. This breed of dog thrives better from a different balance of nutrients that include vitamins and minerals compared to smaller dog breeds.

Grooming

The Malinois is easy to groom because they are short-haired dogs with a woolly undercoat. The hair of this dog is thicker on the tail part and around its neck, but the hair on the hindquarter is longer, and the tail is bushy.

Since this dog has a low-maintenance coat, they only need grooming once a week.

Best Dog Breeds for Children

While it is generally believed that many dogs are naturally great with children, all dogs are still animals. Thus dogs and children must be taught to get along just fine, respect each other, and work safely together.

Even when you believe you have trained your dog, never leave them and your young children home alone. If they must be together, see to it that an adult supervises all interactions between them.

What else must consider when getting this dog breed?

Adoption

It is an incredibly fulfilling endeavor to adopt a canine from a rescue organization or an animal shelter.

It usually means you have offered them a second chance to live life to the fullest. There are many dogs out there waiting to be adopted into a loving family, or a forever home.

All reputable centers will take their time when it comes to matching the right dog with the right people. Staff must learn all they possibly can about every dog they take in and must also spend time getting to know whoever wants to adopt a dog.

They may consider your family and lifestyle, before deciding which dog to match you with. They will also be excited to offer you the best advice and answer whatever questions you might have before you adopt the dog, and even afterward.

Finding a good breeder

If you have decided on adopting a pedigree puppy, then the first place your mind goes is to find a reputable breeder near you.

It would be best to contact The Kennel Club or the secretary of a breed-club who may own a list of available litters or should be able to refer you to the breeders available in your area.

Try to go with a breeder that is part of the Kennel Club’s sure breeder scheme. You can also visit dog shows where you can meet breeders one-on-one and ask questions about the availability of pups of whatever breed you have chosen.

Welcoming your dog to its new home

Whether you’re adopting a tiny puppy for the kids or rehoming a grown dog, this time is exhilarating for both your canine friend and everyone else.

While you anticipate the day you finally welcome the new member of your family, you may need to sort certain things out. Start by getting dog supplies and talking to your family about caring for the new pet.
