While everyone was watching Infinity War last weekend, I ended up streaming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I’ve missed most of the core Avengers saga, but there’s still a lot of fun to be had watching the more disconnected films in the MCU. Guardians is particularly accessible, thanks to how completely removed it is — and just how tonally it feels like its own thing.

I enjoyed the movie, but one thing that really surprised me was how long its final sequence was… if you can even call it a single sequence. The climactic battle takes up nearly half of the movie, with multiple story beats happening just within that fight. Maybe that’s not all that strange for a blockbuster film, but I was still surprised by how effectively it could tell smaller stories within a big, largely isolated battle.

Check out nine trailers from this week below

Ant-man and the Wasp

After all the drama of Infinity War, Marvel will return with… something much, much lighter in fare. The studio put out a full-length trailer for Ant-Man and The Wasp this week, and it’s all about showing what the duo’s fights will look like — with plenty of jokes thrown in between. It comes out July 6th.

Robin Hood

In the Vein of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and King Arthur, Lionsgate Is Coming Out With a Fast-paced, Action-packed Take on Robin Hood. Kingsman Star Taron Egerton Plays Robin Hood, While Jamie Foxx Takes on the Role of Little John. It Comes Out November 21st.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

Adam Driver was a teenager when Terry Gilliam first tried to make this movie. Several failed attempts and script revisions later, the famously cursed film appears to finally be finished — and it’s supposed to appear at Cannes… so long as it isn’t disrupted again by threats from a jilted producer. At the very least, we have this footage for now.

Monsters and Men

After picking up an award at Sundance, Monsters and Men is beginning to make its way to theaters. The film tells the story of multiple people in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and how their lives change after a police shooting. It looks like it’s filled with striking imagery from all around New York. It comes out sometime this fall.

John Travolta actually looks kind of perfect as John Gotti, and he certainly seems comfortable and confident in the role. Gotti tells the story of how he rose to take over the Gambino crime family, and what came after once he started to court too much attention. It comes out June 15th.

A new documentary takes a look at the life and career of Whitney Houston. The film includes a bunch of previously unaired footage and largely appears to be a celebration of her work. It’s supported by her estate, after all, so it seems largely positive and sympathetic to everyone pictured. That puts it in opposition to last year’s well-received doc Whitney: Can I Be Me, which painted a much bleaker picture of what her life was actually like. It comes out July 6th (or you can watch Can I Be Me already on Showtime).

Here’s the first real look at Pose, the new FX series from Ryan Murphy that focuses on ball culture in 1980s New York. The series looks energetic and colorful, and it’s being billed as a “dance musical,” even though it looks like a sprawling character drama. The show starts June 3rd.

Castle Rock

Hulu put out a new teaser for its Stephen King mashup series Castle Rock this week. The show doesn’t follow any single King story. Instead, it takes place in the same universe as his books and seems to be creepy and mysterious in a lot of the same ways. The show debuts July 25th.

Netflix has a new John Woo film coming up, and all I’ll add for context here is that, in its review, The Film Stage called it “the most John Woo movie possible.” So enjoy. It comes out May 4th.
