After spending hours or days writing an excellent proposal, another few days learning how to pass the dreaded interview and finally getting a job, only for you to utter some things that will make your company give you a one-way ticket home.

We sometimes get too familiar with our colleagues, and employers that we forget to act “professional.” It may cost us our jobs, no matter how loved you are in your place of work, always watch your words.

Below are some of the things that will help you save you from hearing the three dreaded words- YOU ARE FIRED!

“But…that’s not part of my job description.”

This is a big no-no, it will send you packing in no time. No boss or company wants a “smarty pants” who isn’t flexible. Before applying for the job, ensure you love it, and you are not just doing it for the money.

It will make working for the company bearable; companies can be a pain in the neck and sometimes want you to do everything they ask you to do without minding the stress.

Be flexible as you can be because no job is ever rigid. You will be asked to perform some specific duties in the long run. Moreover, the more flexible and knowledgeable you are the more indispensable you become to the company.

Be willing to go beyond your role; it shows you are eager to pitch in for the success of the company.

“What do I get from this?”

After accepting to go the extra mile for the company, you may get tempted to ask this question “so…what do I gain from doing this?” Never I repeat, never say this to your boss. It will make you sound superficial and selfish.

Let your Boss know you are not only there for the money; you will earn their respect even more.

“You are wrong.”

Say what now? If you actually said this, I have to say you’ve got nerve! However, that’s not the time to be dauntless. If you feel your employer is wrong about something, do not say it straight to his/her face especially when you are in a meeting with other employees.

First of all, that is rude, there is a reason he/she is the Boss, and you are not. Learn to be polite, if you must tell him, do it in private be calm about your approach. Some employers have egomaniacs and walking to them straight up to tell them they are wrong will make your stay in the company a concise one.

“I will do my best.”

Your Boss wants assurance, and trusted hands not someone who is unsure of his capabilities. Let’s see it the other way round; “Imagine yourself asking, ‘Will you be signing off on my paycheck on the 26th?’ and your boss responding, ‘I will try my best.

It doesn’t sound right to you, isn’t it? Exactly! So don’t ever say I will try my best to your Boss. After all, the reason you got hired is that you proved to them you are capable of being a superman or superwoman.

The challenge we have is we promise the unthinkable when looking for a job and after giving them the impression that you are one of a kind you show them you are not up to the task.

“It wasn’t my fault, he caused it.”

Running away from responsibilities will only make you look like a wimp. Ascribing blames to people other than yourself may not get you fired but will keep you in that position longer than anticipated.

Business owners do not want to irresponsible people handling their investments; they need an entrepreneurial people around them.

Stop pushing blames and accept responsibilities. With more responsibilities comes power; it doesn’t work the other way round. You will only be given power (promotion) if you show that you are responsible.

“There so much going on in life right now… it is getting everything messed up for me.”

It may not be the exact words, but you get the point. Everyone including your Boss has personal challenges, don’t allow our problems affect your productivity and even if it does, do not use it as an excuse.

Think of it this way, would you find it funny if your Boss didn’t sign your paycheck all because he is having a family crisis? You probably would say “he should not allow his personal issues ruin other people’s lives.” If your personal challenges can affect your job, you should perhaps ask for a day off.

However, the more the company functions without your input, the more dispensable you are. So, avoid taking unnecessary leaves; so give all you’ve got to make the company grow. Even though you feel underappreciated, keep giving your best. You are simply sowing seeds, and one day you will get your just reward.

“I will leave”

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but there are hundreds of people out there who are praying to get your position. Do not threaten to leave the company, it is unprofessional, and it will make your Boss start looking for a replacement as soon as possible.

Now you know the seven things you shouldn’t say to your boss, I would like to balance the equation here. Not saying these words will not make you look weak or make people push you over.

Know your limit; if you feel the company is going against your moral code and you are not comfortable with it, politely turn in your resignation letter. After all, it is not all about money.
