Generally speaking, the roof of your house is supposed to last you around 20-25 years. If the environment to live in has a dry or wet climate the lifespan of your roofing should be on the lower end of the spectrum. The lifespan of your roof will also depend on the material it is made of a typical roof made of wooden shingles do not last as long as those made from metal, but usually metal roofs can last as long as 50 years.

We often do not think about changing our roofs or just bother to even check if any damages should be repaired immediately. Many of us do not even know what exactly we should look out for to replace or fix little damages on our roofs.

In this article, we have put together a list of things that you should check before deciding to change your roof.

1. Begin from the inside

The first thing you would want to do is to go to the attic and take a very close look at the ceiling. If you noticed beams of light coming through, that could indicate that some shingles are missing or there is a hole somewhere. If you also notice things like stains on the ceiling floor or walls it could mean that there has been a leak and water has seeped through to cause a couple of damages.

2. Check for sagging or droppings

You need to go outside and look at the roof of your house. If you notice sagging or dropping in any specific areas, then you know there is a problem. Droppings and sagging’s most times are usually a result of severe water damage so if you notice any of these what you need to do is to hire an expert immediately. Because if left unrepaired in might cause severe damage to your home structure.

3. Check your paperwork

You need to check your paperwork to remember when your roof was initially installed. If it has been installed for longer than 20 years, then you need to keep an eye out for any necessary repairs or damages. If you’re still unsure of what to look out for you can employ the service of a professional to help you check for damages on your roof especially if you recently moved into the house or just purchased it.

4. Look for moss

Moss can actually be pretty in some places, but if it grows on your roof, it is often a sign that water is getting trapped in that place. Check the shady parts of your roof if you find most growing there then make sure to brush it off and check to find out what the underlying issue causing the growth of these plants in that area.

5. Check for damages on your shingles or missing ones

To do this, you might be required to get on top of your roof. Look around for any cracks on your shingles, check to see if there are shingles that are curled or cupped singles. All of these are signs that it is time for you to fix damages or replace your roof so if you begin to notice any of these problems it might probably become widespread across your roof and beyond repairs if you do not tackle them immediately.

Bear in mind that you are not supposed to work on your shingles especially those that are curled or cupped since that might cause them to break off. After a severe storm, it is also important that you take a good look if there are any bald spots on your roof. The reason why you get metal roofing sheets or shingles is to help keep water out so if some of them especially your shingles are missing in any specific area water can get into your building and cost damage underneath.
