Wearable technology is gaining traction day by day. It may be of different varieties. Basically, a wearable can be any gadget that involves wearing it on the human body as an act. In other words, it is a digital accessory. It may be in the form of health trackers, which are typically worn as bracelets.

They may be in the form of an advanced watch, like the kind Samsung came out with. It may even be in the form of spectacles. Look at Google Glass.

These are however only the well-known uses of wearable technology that are known by everybody. Wearable technology is something that is subject to innovation. The wearable doesn’t have to be a ring or bracelet or band or spectacles – it doesn’t have to be an accessory. It can even be clothes.

One of the more unusual pieces of wearable technology was seen at the London College of Fashion, where a contest was held by Sony Ericsson. The contest involved designing digital clothing – clothing that had a technological functionality. The winner designed a cocktail dress that had Bluetooth technology.

Wearable Technology

As soon as a call would come to the phone connected with the dress through Bluetooth, the whole dress would light up. Wearable technology is being employed by the military as well Remember the helmet of Ironman’s uniform?

His screen displays all he needs to know. The United States army opted for something similar. They use headgear with displays for their soldiers.

The technology employed in producing this headgear is called holographic optics. Thus wearable technology is pretty versatile, and only imagination is the limit.

According to a Forbes study, 71% of people in the age group of 16-24 want wearable technology. This signals that the popularity of wearables, especially among the youth, is high.

The market is therefore ripe for newer versions of wearable technology to come out. Perhaps the first device to fulfil the criteria of the definition of wearable technology is the calculator watch that came out in the 1980s.

It showed the time, but it could also be used as a calculator. This was seen as increasing utility of a watch by multiple times in that era. There were no smart phone and therefore calculators were not as easily accessible. Only an actual calculator could fulfil the function of a calculator, so this was seen as a breakthrough.

All these gadgets have become extremely popular within the past few years. Excitement about this technology has been sky high.

Newer products are coming out day by day. They combine technology with fashion. The technology is as yet at its initial stage. A lot of developments and innovation are yet to take place. There are various exciting products in store for the public.

There are ski goggles which can be worn when you are skiing. They display your altitude, speed, the speed of the wind and other related information.

Perhaps every sport will become digitised. Adventure sports will definitely become safer. Imagine a mountaineer will not have to carry multiple gadgets for information, all that he needs will be displayed through his glasses.

Wearable technology can also be used to display warnings if a natural disaster is afoot – by using the technology in the same way that contextual advertising can. The uses to which wearable technology can be put are innumerable. The technology is being developed as of now. Soon you will be able to switch on your television with your ring!

There are various reasons why wearables are different than any other product. Wearables provide opportunities to businesses and marketers that cannot be provided by any other product due to its proximity with the customer. They are the perfect messengers for publicity, messages and advertisement.

Wearables generate a lot of data about people. For example, Jawbone, who manufactures a bracelet pedometer and sleep tracking device, was able to determine how long it took for people to go to sleep after an earthquake of 6.0 struck Northern California in the early hours of morning.

They analysed how long it took people within a few miles of the epicentre of the earthquake to go back to sleep. They discovered most people couldn’t get sleep after the tremors. This is just an interesting example. Much more data can be accessed from these devices.

You can get individual as well as collective trends of usage and application by customers. This can be a big benefit for a marketer.
