What Are the Duties of a Line Worker?

Line workers are the backbone of the telecommunications industry. These professionals have a very physically demanding job, and they’re essential for establishing as well as maintaining telecommunication systems.

Line working is considered one of the most dangerous professions today because professionals often work at a great height and handle delicate equipment. A cable worker has a number of responsibilities and here’s a brief look at what they do:

Installing Systems

Telecommunications systems are made up of towers, wires, wireless broadcast and reception equipment, and other such components. All of these components must be installed effectively to ensure communications go smoothly.

This is a cable worker’s job. They will climb the towers, establish new connections, install new equipment, and make sure everything is working well. This is a complex job and must be done carefully because poor installation can cause disruption of services.

Constructing New Sites

Construction of new sites is handled by a team of engineers working with cable workers. The pylons and supporting structures should be placed at optimal locations to get the best results, especially if the installation involves wireless equipment.

Line workers take factors like location, client requirements, connection requirements, and even future connections into account while working on full constructions projects. Without a cable worker’s input,  these installations can be inefficient.

All telecommunications equipment is exposed to harsh outdoor conditions constantly. The conditions take their toll and if the system isn’t properly maintained regularly, it can become damaged.

Line workers are responsible for system maintenance and make sure all wires, components, and transmission equipment are in good condition.

They will repair damaged parts, replace components that can’t be repaired, and ensure overall system integrity. Most telecommunication companies carry out maintenance once every year to ensure components remain in good condition.

Problems can crop up even if the telecommunications systems are maintained well. As these structures are exposed to harsh conditions, unexpected damage is fairly common.

It is the cable worker’s responsibility to respond to reports of problems promptly and assess the damage. Once they have a good idea of the extent of the problem, they provide a detailed report on it and recommend solutions.

Cable workers will also provide a detailed cost estimate of the repairs. Once the repair project is approved, they’ll get to work on the system.

Dismantling Installations

Telecommunication systems are large installations with complex, sensitive equipment. Dismantling a site isn’t easy and requires a considerable amount of skill and effort.

Line workers are just as efficient in dismantling a telecommunications system as they are in establishing it. They take care to preserve all functional equipment so the system can be reinstalled somewhere else is needed.

Dismantling is handled in a well-organized manner to ensure there’s little disruption to the surrounding areas. Dismantling a specific connection is even more intricate and complicated because line workers must ensure the surrounding sensitive equipment isn’t damaged.

Moving Telecommunication Systems

Sometimes companies or clients want to move telecommunication systems to a more optimal location. The moving process is a little more complicated than just the dismantling process.

Line workers carefully disassemble all installations to ensure there’s little to no damage to the systems. They then pack all items carefully, transport them to the new location, and reinstall. Without proper planning and skill, this process can cause a lot of damage to the delicate systems being transported.

Line workers have experience working with different kinds of telecommunication hardware and software. They can install a wide range of antennas, disks, software systems, and physical lines to ensure the system functions smoothly.
