System failure can be as a result of the following;

Hard drive: system failures may be caused by a hard drive with bad sectors, which may lead to the operating system unable to read data/information from the hard drive.

Motherboard: a failed or failing motherboard can also cause your system to crash because the computer is not able to operate or process requests in general.

Random Access Memory (RAM): a bad RAM chip can also lead to system failures because the operating system is not able to access information that is stored on the RAM chip.

Processor: a bad processor usually causes a system failure because the computer cannot function if the processor is not working properly or at all.

Software: System failures due to software problems can occur if the issue in the software, for instance, a bad line of code, is critical enough. The system failure and subsequent computer shut down occurs as an attempt to prevent damage to other software or the operating system.

However, if your computer suffers a system failure this article will help walk through the pain and stress and also help recover lost data with ease.

What you will need

  • An external hard drive
  • Lots of patience
  • A trained computer technician

Step one: back up important data or document on your computer to an external hard drive, at least once a month to reduce the damage in case of an unforeseen system crash.

Step two: calm down, walk away from your computer and take a deep breath. The last thing you want to do is to panic; it won’t solve anything rather it may cause you to take so irrational steps that will further damage your computer. Come back to your computer when are able to think clearly and can take a logical decision; do not yell or hit your computer.

Step three: wait for tomorrow if the system failure happened late in the day or at night; relax, give your computer and yourself a break, after all, tomorrow will be a better day.

Step four: restart the computer and undo everything you did up until the crash including deleting downloads, installing programs and unplugging a new device.

Step five: turn off your computer if it won’t boot, if there is an error message asking you a question that you don’t know the answer, do not guess your way out of it. Also, do not turn off your computer.

Step six: call a professional if your troubleshoot leads nowhere; it often takes an expert to detect the problems of computers with the help of special software. There you have it, six steps to take when you have a system failure. To protect our computer against virus, check out some of the top antiviruses you can download for your computer.

How to extend the life of your computer

To avoiding changing your computer every time, check out the practical steps you can take to prolong the life of your computer. First all, here are the things you need;

  • Computer
  • Screwdriver
  • External hard drive
  • Compressed air
  • Antivirus & anti-spyware software
  • RAM

When dealing with electronics, you need to unplug the device from the power source; ground yourself before touching the inside of a computer. It prevents producing electric shock inside the device.

Step one: turn off and unplug the computer and carefully unscrew the computer case with a screwdriver. To further avoid electric shock, wear an anti-static wrist strap and attach it to your computer to ground you.

Step two: use a compressed air to blow away dust and debris that has accumulated inside, screw the cover back on and also use the compressed air to blow dust away from the exterior of the computer and the keyboards.

Step three: transfer any large files such as movies, photos, office project, etc. from your computer to your external hard drive. Clearing up files over 40-50 megabytes free up valuable hard drive space and allows your computer to run smoothly.

Step four: locate, uninstall and delete programs you don’t use; for PC users, you can do this by locating the control panel and uninstall the programs you no longer use. For Mac users, open the application folder and then click and drag any unwanted programs to the trash, then empty the trash.

Step five: limit the number of programs that run automatically when you turn on your computer; it will increase your computer’s processing speed.

Step six: Every time you access a webpage or read email, your computer automatically stores the information which takes up disk space. Mac users do not have a problem with this because Macs automatically delete such files. However, PCs do not; to manually do so, use disk clean up located in system tools to clean files. Empty out your recycle bin regularly; just because you deleted some files from your system do not remove them from your computer, you have to empty the recycle bin to permanently delete the files from your hard drive.

Step seven: scan your hard drive with antivirus and antispyware program; get programs that can at least scan your system once a month.

Step eight: over time, files from your computer fragment, slowing down your computer. To defrag your computer, open “my computer” and right-click on a C drive. Go to properties, click tools and you will find defragment now.

However, defragment takes several hours so be sure your computer is plugged into a power source and you are not in a hurry to shut it down.  Fortunately for Mac users, Macs with OX operating system do not require a defragmentation

Step nine: on a Mac, permission error can clog the system; before and after you install a new software go to finder, and click go. Select utilities and then disk utility click on Macintosh HD and click repair disk permission.

Step ten: adding RAM will improve your computer’s performance and extend its life. To check the amount of RAM in you currently have, go to the control panel, click system and then the general tab; at the bottom of the page, you should be able to see the amount of Ram in your PC.

For Mac users, simply go to finder, then utility folder and click system profiler, and click on the memory tab.

Note that every computer model requires a different kind of RAM; go to the manufacturer’s website to find out the kind of RAM you should install.
