The iPhone XR supports Dolby Vision / HDR10 like the iPhone XS but lacks the pressure-sensitive 3D Touch technology that has been part of the iPhone lineup since the iPhone 6S.
LCDs may not match OLED in terms of contrast ratio and black level, but they are more than suitable for most users.
The lowest 326 dpi (same as the iPhone 8) is still three times the size of a 40-inch 4K TV (110 dpi), and you’ll even get the same 19.5 aspect ratio: 9 as the iPhone XS, the same color accuracy, and the “120 Hz touch sensor” for a faster response to touch input.
As for the lack of 3D Touch, iOS 12 has long sought to replace most of its features, and the technology will be scrapped next year anyway due to a lack of consumer interest.
Perhaps the difference between the iPhone XS and the iPhone XR is that it’s the latter that has a larger screen. Overall, everything else on the iPhone XR’s display is inferior:
- iPhone XS: 5.8-inch OLED, 2436 x 1125 pixels (458 PPI), 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, 82.9% screen-to-body ratio, 19.5: 9 aspect ratio, true tone
- iPhone XR: 6.1-inch LCD display, 19.5: 9 aspect ratio, true tone, 1792 x 828 pixels (326 PPI), 1400: 1 contrast ratio, 79.0% screen-to-body ratio
At first glance, except for the physical sizes, the iPhone XS and iPhone XR are the same. But they didn’t.
- iPhone XS: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm (5.65 x 2.79 x 0.30 inches) and 177 g (6.24 oz)
- iPhone XR: 150.9x 8.3 mmx 75.7 (5.94 x 2.98 x 0.33 inches) and 194 g (6.84 oz)
Although the iPhone XR has a 5% larger screen than the iPhone XS, it is 10% heavier and slightly thicker. The main reason for this is the LCD screen, which is not as flexible as the OLED, so it cannot fit perfectly into the chassis (look for larger bezels on all sides of the l ‘iPhone screen XR).
The iPhone XS has a stainless-steel casing that offers a slightly more premium feel than the aluminum of the iPhone XR 7000 series (used in iPhone 8 and earlier); its tightness makes the IP68 waterproof. IP67 on iPhone XR.
Performance – Rocket Sleds
Surprisingly, the iPhone XR has the same premium chipset as the iPhone XS:
- iPhone XS, iPhone XR: Apple A12 “Bionic” chipset: six-core processor, quad-core graphics processor, M12 boot coprocessor
The difference is that the iPhone XS comes with 4GB of RAM, while the iPhone XR has 3GB of RAM. This will improve multitasking slightly, as more apps can be stored in memory without reloading.
But most of the extra RAM is needed for the iPhone XS’s dual camera (more in the next section), and no one thinks the iPhone X (3GB) has been slow since last year.
The two new iPhones add a nice touch: small reserves of power so that NFC transactions can be made even when the phones are poorly charged, a unique feature of this year’s models.
The iPhone XR does not have the new speeds of the iPhone XS 4G Cat 16 LTE device (capable of downloading gigabits), but in reality, its Cat 12 600Mbit performance is more than you need. So, while Apple lags with support for 5G, someone who hits such high speeds on 4G is unlikely to do so.
Cameras – Single Vs Double
APPLE Besides the different screen sizes, the second most recognizable difference between iPhone XS and iPhone XR is that the latter only has a rear camera:
- iPhone XS, iPhone XR – Main rear camera – 12 MP, f / 1.8 aperture, 1.4 μm pixel size, Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), Quad True Tone LED, portrait lighting, flash
- iPhone XS: Secondary telephoto lens – 12MP, 1.0µm pixel size, OIS, 2x optical zoom, f / 2.4 aperture
- iPhone XR, iPhone XS – “TrueDepth” front camera – 7MP aperture, f / 2.2
The best news is that not all iPhone XR users have a 2x optical zoom. Yes, this is a useful feature, but you can often zoom in on the subject.
Meanwhile, previous iPhones needed a second camera for Apple’s popular Portrait Mode, but the iPhone XR can work with its unique front and rear cameras.
Like the Pixel 2, the iPhone XS and iPhone XR’s main rear cameras also have a larger pixel size of 1.4μm, which allows them to absorb more light.
This is a crucial upgrade for better low-light photography and again for both phones.
Battery Life and Charging
Those surrounded by the iPhone XR’s LCD screen offer significant advantages here: A lower resolution is much less demanding, and larger size means Apple has more room to place a larger battery.
- iPhone XS: 2,658 mAh
- iPhone XR: 2942 mAh
The outage is perhaps the main bargaining factor for the iPhone XR. The iPhone XS can survive up to 25% in most areas, even the primary iPhone XS Max:
iPhone XR and iPhone XS support the same fast wired charging as iPhone X (50% charge within 30 minutes of an apartment), but Apple again refused to include a fast charger in the package.
Pretty bad with the iPhone XR, but not counting the iPhone XS (while we charge $ 75 for the required charger and compatible cable), theft happens in broad daylight.
Storage and Price
The iPhone turns off here:
- iPhone XS: 64 GB ($ 999), 256 GB ($ 1.149), 512 GB ($ 1.349)
- iPhone XR: 64 GB (749 USD), 128 GB (799 USD), 256 GB (899 USD)
While the $750 price tag makes the headlines, the sweet spot is the 128GB iPhone for just $50 more and $200 less than the 64GB iPhone XS. 128GB is also a great one.
Storage option, as the iPhone XS line seems to provide very little (64GB) and then too much (256GB) for the average user.
Features and Specs
Before highlighting the more significant spec differences, here’s a comparison of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR’s critical features:
Apple has attached great importance to the fact that the iPhone XS and XR have the same A12 Bionic processor. It’s okay if you want to spend less on the phone, and you can take the iPhone XR, and it’ll work just as well on the same silicon.
A significant difference is the display technology. The iPhone XS has a brighter OLED screen than the iPhone XR, which has an LCD screen.
OLEDs can achieve deeper blacks and larger pixels per inch, making them more cautious when viewed up close from an LCD screen. That doesn’t mean the iPhone XR has a lousy screen because Apple’s LCD screens are great.
You can get the iPhone XS with an incredible 512GB of storage, but that’s not an option on the XR, which is now capped at 128GB due to a price drop. Most people will accept the primary 64GB storage option.
