Apple makes call recording hard on purpose — but it isn't impossible. Here are the apps that still work, how they work, and what to watch out for legally.

First: the legal part
Call-recording laws differ. Two-party-consent states (California, Florida, Pennsylvania and 10 more in the US) require everyone on the line to agree. In the UK, the EU and India, recording a personal call is generally fine for private use but publishing it needs consent. Always announce you’re recording — it protects you.
How iPhone call recording actually works
Apple does not expose the audio stream of a phone call to third-party apps. Every recorder app routes your call through a conference-call line, records that line on their server, then sends the file back to your phone. That means: you need a stable data connection, the per-minute cost adds up, and the audio sits briefly on the vendor’s server.
1. Rev Call Recorder
Free, no per-minute cost, excellent audio quality — Rev makes money by selling transcription separately. The best pick if you need recordings for note-taking and interviews.
2. TapeACall Pro
Veteran app, subscription-based, exports to Dropbox, Google Drive and email. Transcription available via add-on.
3. Call Recorder — IntCall
Pay-per-minute instead of subscription, which is cheaper if you record occasionally. Good international calling rates built in.
4. Rocall
Simple interface, flat subscription, no limits on recordings. Good value if you record daily.
5. Google Voice
Free (US only). Press 4 during an incoming call and Google Voice records both sides. Works on iPhone via the Voice app.
6. Truecaller
Primarily a caller-ID app, but its Premium tier includes call recording for incoming calls on iOS (via the conference method).
Tips for better recordings
- Use a wired earphone with mic rather than speakerphone.
- Record in a quiet room — the conference line amplifies ambient noise.
- Download the file off the vendor’s server as soon as you’re done.
- Back up to your own cloud, not the recorder app’s.
